Criminal Justice Committee Inquiry into Harm Caused by Substance Misuse

16 May 2025

On 16 May 2025, the Scottish Parliament’s Criminal Justice Committee launched an inquiry into the harm caused by substance misuse in Scottish prisons. It’s in three parts: (i) how substances enter prisons (ii) the impact of substances on prisoners, their families and staff members (iii) rehabilitation and support for prisoners using substances. Its Call for Views runs until 22 August 2025. The Committee has taken two sessions of evidence so far on 28 May 2025 and 4 June 2025. (One of things that SPS said in evidence was that it simply doesn’t have the money to install window grilles at all Scottish prisons in order to prevent drug deliveries by drone.) Follow-up information regarding costs was provided by SPS to the Committee.
